Q: Those of us who work with you know how much heart you bring to this role. What does it mean to you to serve as a school principal?
Dr. Krishna Darlene Spates: It’s truly an honor. I never take lightly the responsibility of serving a school community. I’m especially proud to be the Proud Principal of Shadow Hills Engineering and Design Magnet Academy in Palmdale, California—a vibrant community filled with brilliant students, dedicated educators, and families who deeply care about learning and belonging.
Q: You’ve been in education for a long time—what experiences shaped the leader we see today?
Dr. Spates: I bring more than 17 years of experience as a classroom teacher and over five years as an administrator. Those years reinforced that student success is deeply connected to the systems we design—and redesign. I remain relentless in my commitment to dismantling the predictive power of demographics by working collaboratively with educators, students, caregivers, community partners, and policymakers.
Q: You often quote, “Every system is perfectly designed to get the results it gets.” Why does that idea guide your leadership?
Dr. Spates: That idea, articulated by LaSalle and Johnson (2019), is a powerful reminder that outcomes are not accidental—they are produced by design. If we want different results for students, especially those historically marginalized, leaders must focus on the right work. That means intentionally disrupting inequitable patterns and redesigning systems to better serve all learners.
Q: Anyone on the team knows you hold high expectations for students—and for us. Where does that philosophy come from?
Dr. Spates: I believe high expectations paired with care are transformative. My goal is to launch accomplished, resilient, and confident student leaders—regardless of gender, cultural background, language proficiency, socioeconomic status, or educational designation. Research consistently shows that belief, rigor, and access matter—and it’s our responsibility as educators to ensure students are not limited by labels or assumptions.
Q: You’ve been intentional about building a culture of inquiry and data-informed decision-making. Why is that so important?
Dr. Spates: Sustainable improvement requires clarity, coherence, and reflection. Collaborative cycles of inquiry allow teams to examine practice, analyze data, and refine instruction with precision. When data is used as a tool for learning—not judgment—it strengthens instruction and improves outcomes while reinforcing collective responsibility.
Q: You talk often about honoring the past but not being bound by it. How does that show up in your leadership?
Dr. Spates: We cannot change history—but educators have the power to chart a future that doesn’t replicate it. That future begins with doing what is right for all students, not just what is familiar. Leadership requires courage to challenge long-standing practices that no longer serve our learners.
Q: One thing staff consistently say is that you energize people. Is that something you lead with intentionally?
Dr. Spates: Absolutely. Transformational change never happens in isolation. Guided by the principles of resonant leadership, as described by McKee, Boyatzis, and Johnston (2006), I strive to mobilize energy in others by drawing on hope, vision, meaning, and purpose. When leaders speak to the hearts of those they lead, they unlock talent, build resilience, and inspire collective action.
Q: Last question—what keeps you showing up every day with such conviction and joy?
Dr. Spates: I don’t just welcome this work—I find deep joy and purpose in it. I continue to lead with courage and conviction because every student, and every adult who supports them, is worth it. Always.
